How Sitting on the Floor Affects Posture and Back Health

A new trend called #floortime is gaining serious traction online, with over 19 million views already. And as always, the internet is split in two: some praise sitting on the floor, believing it helps with posture and back health. Others criticize the trend, convinced it’s just another bizarre idea made up by internet users.

So what do experts think about sitting on the floor? Overall, doctors see no harm in occasionally swapping a chair for the floor. Let’s take a closer look at whether this practice is actually beneficial.

Why do we sit on the floor in the first place?

Sitting on the floor just for the sake of it is rare. Usually, we’re doing something while we’re down there. Most often, it’s related to video games, which continue to grow in popularity every year. Some of them even promote fitness — an activity that can be combined with sitting on the floor.

Phones are also a common companion during floor time. We’re not just chatting or scrolling social media — we’re playing mobile games. In recent years, that includes iGaming titles as well. These games are gaining popularity worldwide, especially in densely populated developing countries where people now have access to affordable phones and mobile internet. Arcade-style gambling games, particularly crash games, are especially popular. According to review platforms, the popularity of Jet-x in india has been growing for several years, and today, the game can be found on many online casino sites. It’s an engaging game — and while playing it, people often end up sitting on the floor, phones in hand.

Chair or floor — which is better?

For years we’ve heard the same message: office work, prolonged sitting at a computer, and a sedentary lifestyle lead to serious health issues and can even shorten life expectancy. According to WHO experts, around 4–5 million deaths per year are linked to physical inactivity. Doctors recommend regularly changing position and seating surfaces to reduce some of the negative effects.

Studies have shown that sitting in the same position for too long can trigger lower back pain and other health issues. But there is a way to help yourself — by occasionally sliding down to the floor. This position improves posture and helps strengthen the spine. Doctors say that when a person sits on the floor, back and spinal muscles are engaged (unlike when sitting in a chair, where they tend to relax). It also lowers the risk of developing a slouch.

Another benefit is that sitting on the floor increases flexibility. To maintain a stable and comfortable position, some muscles need to be stretched.

How to sit properly

If you’ve never practiced floor sitting before, start with just one or two minutes. Sit with your back against a flat surface and cross your legs. This posture increases blood flow and range of motion, relieves tension, and supports healthy digestion. Once it feels comfortable, gradually extend your sitting time to about 30 minutes.

Don’t be too quick to give up your chair. The best approach is to alternate between the two — each has its own benefits. Sitting on the floor improves posture, enhances flexibility, and strengthens muscles. Sitting in a chair provides good back support and takes pressure off the neck and spine.
